Central/South America
Central/South America is a term often used interchangeably by many Americans but also those located in other parts of the world. Sadly, this is not only geographically incorrect, but it is also a sure way of selling short the individual countries that make up these areas. A map of Central America will quickly show you that the region consists of seven countries which are – in alphabetical order – Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. It is important to realize that when speaking of Central/South America, many Europeans simply refer to it as just another portion of the American continent. When reporting on Central America news, some commentators may even go ahead and lump Mexico into the mix as well, even though it is most certainly not considered to be a member of Central America and its countries. Of course, there is many a Central America map that does not contain Belize or Panama either, even though they are part of it. |

South America, on the other hand, is also a bit of a confusion issue for many. While it is true that a map of South America clearly defines that it is a continent even though it is part and parcel of the Americas. It is interesting to note that some territories on the South America map show that they are under the control of foreign governments, such as the Falkland Islands, French Guiana and the South Sandwich Islands. Maps of South America clearly show that (in alphabetical order) Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela are part and parcel of this region.
No discussion on Central/South America would be complete without pointing out that while there is considerable affection for the money and consumer goods of the West, a large number of indigenous peoples still inhabit the continent and continue on with their way of life, in spite of the frantic lifestyle the West is dictating. Facts on South America would be incomplete if Colombia, South America, was not to receive an honorable mention. A long and colorful history crowns this jewel of the Central/South America region, and many tourists love to visit to also explore the remnants of civilizations that occurred prior to Columbia, South America. As you continue your study of Central/South America, perhaps with an emphasis on South America countries, or quite possibly with the idea of gaining a more through understanding of the political maps of South America, the facts remain that these amazing areas may be close together yet the rich history, the ancient cultures, and the many traditions that can still to this day be observed all add to the breathtaking facts about South America that no book can adequately describe. |
