France
France is a country plagued by stereotypes. Speak of France, and you might think of French kissing, which is called something different in other parts of the world, French food which is notorious for its small portions and outlandish recipes, the French maid outfit which is a staple for adult Halloween parties, and perhaps also the Freedom Fries, aka French Fries. Yet no matter if you can only think of a French kiss when someone mentions France, or the Eiffel Tower, this country is one of the great European nations that are well worth a visit. As you are planning your trip to France, pick up a map of France and plan your itinerary. It is easy to get sidetracked and end up visiting the touristy areas that contain more tourist traps than authentic attractions and while these little resorts and shops are fun to visit, they do precious little to help you get face to face with the real France, the country that spawned the French Revolution which changed life in Europe forever. |

Since you may stay away from those tourist spots, it is important to pick up some rudiments of the French language and to also keep a French English dictionary close by. Granted, the pronunciation of many words will at first stump you, but once you become familiar with it the patterns will begin to emerge and before you know it you, too, will venture out of your shell and speak French!
Visit museums dedicated to the French and Indian War, or simply lounge at the forgotten coves of the French beaches; spend Christmas in France, visit the Eiffel Tower or marvel at the gigantic bridge named the Millau Viaduct. Charter a boat to travel up the Loire and down the Seine. Perhaps you will be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the wild horses of the Camargue, or you will simply sit and watch the boats depart from Marseille. You can see that there are many places to visit away from the tourist resorts and hotels, and if you are able to stay in the smaller hotels, you will be rewarded with not only exquisite service but also the privilege of living in historic surroundings as most buildings have far reaching historic roots. As you prepare to leave, take one last look at the French flag flying in the breeze at Charles de Gaulle International Airport, and just as you are ready to board your flight with Air France you suddenly realize that you will – without a doubt - be back. |
