Mexico
When speaking of Mexico, there is often a bit of confusion as to exactly where this country is located. Most everyone knows that it borders the United States of America but it is rarely considered to be a North American country, in spite of the fact that it clearly does not belong to Central or South America. Mexico also shows an interesting – if somewhat misleading – economic dichotomy. On paper it is regarded as a modestly wealthy nation where its people not only make ends meet but are actually considered to be living on wages above the median income. Yet when one drives through the Mexican cities and villages, it becomes painfully obvious that under the Mexican flag there is a unity of a large number of poverty stricken individuals and a small number of extremely well to do ones. This dynamic has led to many revolutionary ideas and mutterings, and every so often there are skirmishes in the governmental chambers. |

Throughout the world, Mexico is considered a prime vacation spot. Mountain climbers enjoy the challenges of the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain ranges, those in search of history like to visit Oaxaca, Mexico and for the adventurous travelers there is only one spot on the map of Mexico: Iztaccihuatl. The weather is unbeatable with its warm and sunny days, and many vacationers have found themselves spending Christmas in Mexico to get away from the cold. Beach resorts in Mexico are heavily marketed to tourists, and there is very little authentic Mexican food to be found, since much of it has been adapted to sooth the American and also European palate – even though they fly the Mexico flag.
If you find yourself visiting Mexico City or any of the border towns, keep in mind that poverty there is running rampant and you will need to be cautious of your possessions as well as your person. While Mexican culture itself is one that prizes hospitality to visitors and strangers, there are those Mexicans – sometimes even police officials – who will imprison Westerners for a finder’s fee or ransom. Yet generally speaking, if you keep to the more touristy areas, you will find more security as well. Granted, the Mexican recipes you will find are not authentic, but the fun in the sun with a Mexican hat dance and Mexican music are not to be underestimated. Similarly, when you decide to go on an adventure with just you and the Mexico map, be sure to let a number of people know where you are planning on going, when you will return, and which side stops you will take. Instruct them to look for you if you do not return by a pre-determined time. |
